allotments
An allotment is a green space which is divided up into individual plots of land of which individuals, or families rent from a certain party- Town Council, County Council or a local farmer- usually on a yearly basis and upon which they use to grow their own food.
They possess many of the characteristics of community gardens such as reconnecting people to nature and the soil; allowing people on low incomes to subsidise these by growing their own fresh and healthy food; building self-esteem and encouraging medium levels of exercise and offering the opportunities for the community to come together and interact.
Usually, allotments are taken up, but not always, by those who have some experience of food growing to begin with.
If you know of an allotment or are offering them on your land, please support
